Leaders of all “like-minded parties” in the Opposition will on January 29 meet in the national capital to discuss the “way ahead against BJP”, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said on Friday.

“Leaders of all like-minded parties will meet in Delhi on Jan 29 to deliberate on the way ahead against BJP,” Pawar said.

On Friday, a rally was organised in Mumbai that saw the coming together of opposition leaders including Pawar, Sharad Yadav, D Raja, Hardik Patel, Omar Abdullah, Dinesh Trivedi and Sushilkumar Shinde.

The “Save the Constitution” march was targeted at the Modi government, as the leaders put up a united front that might ripen into a pan-India opposition ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

The opposition meeting is scheduled to take place a day after the Union government has called an all-party meet on January 28 to ensure smooth conduct of proceedings in both Houses of parliament during the upcoming Budget Session.

The meeting will be chaired by Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan and will seek opposition’s support as the Centre is seeking the smooth passage of controversial bills like the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill as well as the Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) Bill.

The Budget session of Parliament will commence from January 29 and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the Budget 2018 for the fiscal year 2018-19 on February 1 after the tabling of the Economic Survey, detailing the state of the economy on January 31.

The first phase of the session will be from January 29 to February 9. After a recess, Parliament will meet again from March 5 to April 6.

This will be the first budget post of the Narendra Modi government post the introduction of the GST (Goods and Services Tax) and its last full budget before the Lok Sabha polls in 2019.
