The BJP on Saturday expressed confidence of winning over 40 seats in Tripura as it vowed to start a new era of development in the northeastern state which has been a fortress of the Left for the last 25 years.

Addressing a press conference in the state capital of Agartala, the General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ram Madhav said the early trends were showing the party to be leading on 41 seats which was “historic”.

“We are satisfied with the trends coming in… We are confident of winning over 40 seats and form the government in Tripura. An era of change and development will begin under the BJP,” Madhav said.

“It’s a historic verdict and the credit goes to the hardwork of Modi ji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi), party chief (Amit Shah) and all the workers,” said Madhav adding that Modi had addressed four rallies in Tripura.

According to early trends, the BJP and its alliance partner, Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura, were surging ahead on 41 of the 59 assembly seats while the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) was ahead on just 19 seats.

In the 2013 Assembly Polls, the CPI(M) had won 49 seats, while the Congress bagged 10 seats and the BJP failed to win even a single seat in the state.

The BJP had got only around 1.5 per cent votes in the assembly election five years back.
