Smriti Irani, the newly elected BJP MP from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, responded to Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s congratulatory message to her following his defeat at her hands.

Rahul Gandhi, while addressing a press meet after his party’s dismal performance in the general elections, had said, “I want Smriti Irani ji to keep people’s faith and take care of Amethi with love.”

Smriti Irani responded to Rahul’s message during her visit to Amethi when she told reporters, “I have got the message loud and clear. To the person who gave me the message, I would like to say that I have received the message.”

Irani’s response came after her close aide in Amethi, Surendra Singh, was shot dead at his residence. Singh was the former head of Baraulia village under Jamo police station limits and had worked closely with Irani and campaigned for her during the elections. He was shot dead by bike-borne assailants when he was sleeping outside his house.

Singh was instrumental in Irani’s history-defining victory over the Congress chief.

Irani lost no time in reaching Amethi to meet the family of Surendra Singh and participated in his cremation. She even carried the bier on her shoulders.

She told his family members that they were her responsibility and she would take care of them and asked party workers to exercise restraint.

Irani had scripted history in Lok Sabha elections 2019 by defeating three-time Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi, wresting a seat that served as a Gandhi family bastion since 1980, except 1998.
