NEW DELHI, 20 JUNE: Against the backdrop of the controversy over the recent elevation of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the BJP’s election campaign committee head, party patriarch L K Advani today met Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat.
Mr Advani is understood to have discussed with the Sangh chief the recent developments in the party, including the elevation of Mr Modi as election campaign committee chief and the JD(U)’s decision to quit the National Democratic Alliance.
The meeting between Mr Advani and Mr Bhagwat, which lasted 75 minutes, was the first after the former had quit all party posts on 10 June, upset over the elevation of Mr Modi at the Goa conclave of the BJP.
Sources said all these issues were discussed between the two leaders.
Mr Advani is also reportedly opposed to RSS joint general secretary Suresh Soni and BJP general secretary (organisation) Ram Lal, the Sangh’s pointsman in the party, and wants their removal.
It is, however, not clear to what extent Mr Advani’s grievances will be redressed.
Mr Advani had quit the party posts saying he was finding it difficult to reconcile with the present style of functioning in the BJP and that most leaders of the party were concerned only with their personal agenda.
He had withdrawn his resignation on 11 June after Mr Bhagwat talked to him over phone and convinced him that all concerns raised by him would be looked into by the party. Mr Advani has reasoned that Mr Modi’s anointment will drive away allies and weaken the NDA coalition. After the JD-U walked out of the NDA over Mr Modi’s elevation, Mr Advani’s contention got further strengthened.
The veteran BJP leader was scheduled to meet Mr Bhagwat yesterday but the meeting was postponed as Mr Advani was indisposed.
Former BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu met Mr Bhagwat before Mr Advani.
