PCC chief Adhir Chowdhury moved Calcutta High Court on Thursday seeking security during the state panchayat elections scheduled to be held next month.

He was not opposed by any state counsel as the advocates are staying away from the court.

This helped the Behrampur MP appear in person before the Division Bench of acting Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya and Justice Arijit Banerjee and mention the matter which is scheduled to come up for hearing tomorrow.

Clad in white, the PCC chief submitted an extension of the notification announcing the schedule of panchayat election.

In the backdrop of the ongoing violence, the 30- page petition further sought ensuring that all candidates can file their nomination papes safely.

If a candidate cannot file nomination at his/her constituency, the PCC chief submitted that he/she be allowed to file his papers at the office of the state election commissioner/ district magistrate.

Such nomination papers are to be moved by internet to the respective panchayat or zilla parishad. The PCC chief also prayed for deployment of central forces from the date of filing of nomination papers to the date of filing and counting.

Together with central forces, the presence of central officials during the panchayat election and counting of votes was also prayed for. Chowdhury had earlier hinted that Congress will move court seeking redressal against the alleged unleashing of violence by criminals backed by ruling party.

The panchayat elections are going to be farcial, he apprehended as the ruling party wants a panchayat system without an Opposition.

Congress nominees are being prevented from filing nomination all over the state, the PCC chief said. If Oppostion is prevented from filing nomination, then it would amount to forcing a boycott of panchayat elections, he said.

Things have come to such a pass that candidates belonging to scheduled castes and schedued tribes are not being allowed to collect the requisite certificate which they require to contest the elections, Chowdhury said. The PCC chief also demanded deployment of central forces during the nomination process, elctions and the counting of votes.
