Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said the Delhi Budget 2018-19 has sought to focus, among other things, on development of roads, providing clean water and improving sewer system in the national capital.

Addressing a press conference after the Budget was tabled in the Delhi assembly by his Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, Kejriwal hailed the Budget, saying that it was aimed to benefit all sections of the society including the poor, women, middle class people and students.

Kejriwal said the AAP government has been committed to take development to every house in the city.

The CM said this was the first “Green Budget” under which 26 specific actionable points have been mentioned to reduce pollution levels in the national capital.

He said the government has also fixed a timeline for every project whose progress will be reviewed by the Chief Secretary on a weekly basis.

Referring to roads, Kejriwal said the government has proposed Rs 1000 crore on the development of roads and lanes which are under the municipal corporations.

The AAP leader said the Delhi government will spruce up 500 kilometres of roads with greenery in a bid to curb dust pollution in the national capital.

“The PWD has been given the task of beautifying and landscaping all roads with a width of over 100 feet. It will be done on the lines of the approach road to terminal T3 of Delhi airport,” he said, adding that the government has allocated Rs 1,500 crore for development works in unauthorised colonies.

The Delhi CM said this year’s Budget has sought to effect a “paradigm shift” to address the issue of sewer in the national capital.

The government has allocated Rs 2,777.50 crore for water supply and sewage treatment for 2018-19.

Kejriwal said that instead of large sewage treatment plants (STPs), smaller ones would be set up so that the recycled water can be used for horticulture, water bodies, and toilets, instead of wasting it.

As regards water, Kejriwal said that Delhi, which has a population of about 2 crore people, gets 900 MGD water. However, he said there had been a problem of management of resources.

The CM said that bulk water meters would be installed in reservoirs and water treatment plants across the city and a daily audit would be done.
