The Hill unit of the Trinamul Congress, which had remained inactive ever since the Gorkhaland agitation began in June last year, on Monday said it will finally resume activities, following instructions from top leaders.

The party also said that it will not disturb either the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) or the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), the two major parties in the Hills.

“During the recent 104-day agitation, the TMC (Hills) had stopped party activities in the Hills, considering the situation and the efforts to restore peace and normality in the Hills.

However, we got instructions from our high command that we should start our party activities from now on, which we will do,” TMC (Hills) working president, Shubhamoy Chatterjee, said here on Monday.

Following the instructions, the Hill unit of the ruling party also held a meeting and has formed a five-member core committee, comprising leaders like Milan Dukpa, SK Rai, Dinesh Gurung, Chun Chun Bhutia, and Rajen Tamang.

“We will also have a general meeting of our party on 22 March to discuss what our future course of action would be. We have invited cadres of our party to the meeting,” said Mr Chatterjee.

According to him, the TMC (Hills) would work for peace and prosperity of the Hills and not disturb either the GJMM, which runs the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), or the GNLF, which is in charge of the Hill Area Development Committee (HADC).

“We want everyone to work for peace in the Hills, along with good governance. We want to usher in a good political environment in the Hills. We will, however, put forward various problems of the people and their demands with the GTA and the HADC,” Mr Chatterjee said, adding that he being a member of the HDAC, he will also work for the people.

Mr Chaterjee also said that emphasis would be not on increasing the number of members of their party, but on good governance. “There are a lot of vacant posts in our party, where we would either fill new people or wait for directions from our high command,” he added.
