10 pilgrims killed, 55 injured in bus accident in Kangra

Ten pilgrims from Punjab were on Thursday killed while fifty five other suffered injuries after a private bus fell into gorge in Dehra area of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, around 150 km from here.

Superintendent of Police, Kangra, Sanjeev Gandhi said the pilgrims were on their way to Jawalaji Temple from Amritsar in Punjab when the accident took place.

“The driver of the private bus lost control over the vehicle near Dhaliara after which it fell into gorge,” he said, adding the accident took place at around 10.45 a.m.

Gandhi said rescue teams from Dehra, Dhaliara and Kangra were rushed to the spot and the injured were rushed to Tanda Medical Hospital where ten pilgrims including two women were declared brought dead. “Fifty-five persons who had suffered injuries in the accident have been admitted in the hospital and the condition of some of them is said to be critical,” he said.

“Initial investigations suggest that the driver was over-speeding at the time of accident and in addition, he didn’t have knowledge of driving in hilly terrain,” he added.

All of the victims were the residents of Amritsar in Punjab and they were on their way to to Jawalaji Temple in Kangra district after overnight stay at Chintpurni Temple in Una district.

Governor Archarya Devvrat and Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh have expressed grief over death of the pilgrims from Punjab.

Singh directed the district administration to provide all possible assistance to the injured and Rs 10,000 each is being provided to the victims as immediate relief.
