Record production of food grains, says govt

With agriculture and its allied sectors registering 4.4 % growth, foodgrains production of 2016-17 has broken all previous records, touching a production estimate of 273.38 million metric tonnes, Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said on Monday.

He said the advance estimates for 2016-17 have crossed 273 million tonnes, 8.67 % higher than last year and 6.37% higher than the average production of the past five years. The expected production for pulses is also highest at 22.40 million tonnes registering a growth of around 37%, the minister said.

The campaign to ensure soil health cards has also proved fruitful and as of now 7.25 crore soil health cards have been distributed, said a senior officer of the Agriculture Ministry. Similarly cumulative area under organic farming has increased from 7.23 lakh hectares to 20 lakh hectares during the past three years, the Ministry claimed.

As regards other agriculture-related sectors, production has increased impressively: milk production by 16.9 %, egg production by 17.92 %, and fish production by 20.1 %, the officer said.

While milk production has increased from 398 million tonnes to 465 million tonnes, egg production has gone up from 210.93 billion to 248.73 billion crore, and fish from 272.88 lakh tonnes to 327 lakh tonnes during the past three years, the officer said.
