MIDNAPORE, 17 JUNE: Trinamul Congress workers attacked a police team in Banshberia village at Chandrakona in West Midnapore last night.
Three police officers were injured, a woman constable was physically assaulted, uniforms of some officers were tarnished with mud and a police vehicle was damaged. The team were reportedly raiding the village to prevent the marriage of a minor girl.
Police have arrested three Trinamul workers, including the party&’s Mangrul anchal president Sitaram Ghosh, but they failed to find the minor girl who was abducted by a local youth when the girl along with her parents arrived at their relative&’s home in Banshberia village.
Police said they had gone to the village to conduct an investigation based on the complaint lodged by the father of the minor girl. But, when a team of police reached the village some Trinamul workers resisted them from conducting the raid.
The mob hurled stones at the cops and dragged a woman constable out from the police vehicle when police tried to pressurise them. They then ransacked the vehicle and threw mud at the officers.
“As the situation turned violent, more police officers were called in and they finally managed to bring the situation under control. But, we had to retreat from the place. We have already mobilised our personnel to gather information about the whereabouts of the girl and we hope we will soon find her,” said Mr Ashish Jain, officer-in-charge of Town Chandrakona police station.
Some locals said the girl&’s father had come to meet a local youth, Mongol Dolui’s family to arrange his daughter’s marriage with the youth. But when he refused to negotiate with the youth’s family he abducted the minor girl so he could secretly marry her. When police were informed of the incident they raided the village.
The local Trinamul Congress leader, Mr Sitaram Ghosh, who led the agitation, however, claimed the youth was framed with false case of abduction. “When the girl&’s family were informed police were aware of the underage marriage, they lodged a complaint of abduction against the youth,” a Trinamul Congress worker said.
