Raiganj, 7 July
In protest against the poor drainage system of the locality, the locals blocked National Highway 31 at Panjipra in the Goalpokhar police station area of North Dinajpur district for more than two hours this morning.
A huge traffic congestion occurred as a result of the road block. Reportedly, after heavy rains for some hours last night, most of the roads at Taradanga and Dalhousi Road para in Panjipara were water logged. Several 100 residents were stuck in their houses.
The Congress MLA of Goalpokhar, Mr Golam Robbani, said: "Besides roads, houses at Taradanga and Dalhousi Road para areas were water logged too. Some houses were damaged as a result. When the residents wanted to inform the matter to the BDO this morning, he did not receive the telephone call of the residents. Hence, the locals blocked the road.”
“After being informed, the subject was brought to the notice of the District Magistrate,” he said.
The blockade was withdrawn later with the assurance of the DM.
The SDO, Islampur, Mr Samanjit Sengupta, said: “We had information that a culvert collapsed as a result of which there was water stagnation. The BDO of the concerned block saved the locality from water logging with his initiative.”
“The broken culvert will be repaired very soon," Mr Sengupta said.
