Bail granted to man accused in Pradip Ta murder case
KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: The Division Bench of Mr Justice Jayanta Biswas and Mr Justice Subal Baidya of Calcutta High Court today granted bail petition of  Patitpaban Ta, an accused in the murder of former CPI-M MLA Pradip Ta. The accused had spent 450 days in police custody and a charge-sheet has been filed against him. In all, police had arrested 31 persons in connection with this incident.
CP protests recent gangrapes
KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: Supporters of the Chhatra Parishad today staged a demonstration in front of Writers’ Buildings protesting rise in crimes against women and demanding action against the culprits of the recent gangrape at Barasat and Nadia. The Chhatra Parishad claimed that 23 of their supporters were arrested by police. Later, a delegation of the Left-backed students’ associations submitted a memorandum to the chief minister’s office on the same issue.
Presi violence: Rights panel summons senior cop
KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: The West Bengal Human Rights Commission has decided to summon the Kolkata Police Commissioner to answer some outstanding questions about the violence at Presidency University in April. Top members at the commission today sat together and examined both the inquiry report submitted by former Presidency head Amal Mukherjee and a report submitted by the Commissioner of Police, registrar Rabindranath Samanta said. They’ve decided to examine the Commissioner of Police, as well as the Officer-in-Charge of Jorasanko Police Station, a sub-inspector and two constables.
Boy hangs himself
KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: Police found the body of a student from Jadavpur last night. They said Suvadip Das (13) was locked in a room last night by his mother following an argument. Later, around 11 p.m. last night Suvadip’s elder sister found his body hanging from the ceiling. This morning, the boy’s grandmother lodged a complaint alleging his mother had killed him. Police have started an investigation and detained the victim’s mother.
Groups clash
KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: Police arrested a youth from Benapukur last night for his alleged involvement in a clash between two groups in which another youth was injured. Police said two groups clashed last night, in which at least one gunshot was fired. Mohammad Arshad Khan was injured and has been admitted to a city hospital. Police have started an investigation. 
Man held for molesting
KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: Police arrested M D Wasim on charges of molesting a woman at Sealdah station this afternoon. Police said he pushed the woman and made lewd remarks.
Woman raped
KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: A 24-year-old differently abled woman was allegedly raped by a neighbour at Shantinagar near Kestopur this afternoon. The accused, Uttam Das (45), entered the victim’s home when her parents were out. A neighbour heard the woman&’s cries and rushed to the spot and informed local people. By the time locals reached the place, the accused had already escaped.
Woman killed in accident
KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: Shanti Majhi (42) was killed after she was hit by a lorry on Dhapa Road off EM Bypass this morning. She was riding pillion on a motorbike. She was declared brought dead when taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital. Her son Hemanta who was riding the bike received minor injuries.
Man arrested for cheating youths
KOLKATA, 13 JUNE: A 30-year-old man, Akshay Kumar, was arrested on charges of cheating many youths of nearly Rs 42 lakh after assuring them jobs in the Railways. A complaint was lodged in this connection with New Market police a few days ago. Acting on a tip-off, police today arrested the accused.
Rezzak Mollah optimistic
BASANTI, 13 JUNE: "We will come to power in the 2016 assembly election and then all Trinamul Congress members, including Madan, will be sent to jail after CBI inquiry,” Mr Abdur Rezzak Mollah, the sitting MLA of Canning (east) and the district CPI-M leader, said in a rally today at Basanti. He said TMC has destroyed democracy during the filing and withdrawal of nominations and is slowly digging its own grave.
