India’s shooting sensation, 15-year-old Shapath Bharadwaj, on Sunday won his maiden bronze medal in ISSF Jr World Cup held in Porpetto, Italy.

Shapath defeated Italy’s Eraldo Appolini 48-40 in the match for the bronze medal. James Dedman of Great Britain and Miki Yloni of Finland bagged gold and silver, respectively. Shapath missed the match for gold medal by one point and he was the youngest among the six finalists.

Shapath qualified for the finals after scoring second highest (131/150) in the qualifying round. His score was two points less than that of Eraldo.

National Rifle Association’s General Secretary Rajeev Bhatia, chief coach of National Jr Shotgun Team Vikram Singh Chopra, Olympics Gold Quest’s CEO Viren Rasquinha, Khel Ratna Awardee and former world champion Ronjan Sodhi, Chairman Of ATS group Getamber Anand and many others have congratulated the budding shooter on his achievement.

He is being coached by Yoginder Pal Singh for three years and has been selected by the Ministry of Sports for its prestigious Target Olympic Podium Scheme, comprising PV Sandhu, Saina Nehwal, Sakshi Malik, Gagan Narang and others.

He came in the limelight after qualifying for the senior national team of double trap in December last year and thereafter made a record by entering the final of ISSF Senior World Cup in Cyprus in May this year.

He bagged two gold medals in Italy last year in 13th International Grand Prix by defeating his opponent Eraldo Apollini by making a new national record by scoring 139/150.
