Siliguri, 16 July
At a time when the administration allegedly deployed home-guards and constables wearing uniforms resembling that of Central forces at polling booths in the second phase of the panchayat elections, the Cooch Behar district Left Front (LF) leaders are preparing a list of highly sensitive polling stations, demanding deployment of Central forces there for free and fair polls.
The Cooch Behar district CPI-M secretary, Mr Tarini Roy, said party leaders across the district are preparing a list of highly sensitive booths afresh demanding deployment of Central forces there so that LF supporters can come out of their homes without fear. Mr Roy alleged that people, who support the LF, are facing continuous threats from the local Trinamul Congress (TMC) leaders.
“Demanding deployment of Central forces at highly sensitive polling stations we would submit an appeal to the district magistrate and the state election commission just a week before the poll day. We are preparing a list of hyper-sensitive polling booths,” Mr Roy said.
The TMC district president, Mr Rabindranath Ghosh, denied the charges of terror tactics and said: “The CPI-M leaders are framing false charges against us. The Left parties have killed three TMC activists in Cooch Behar over the past two months. Not a single CPI-M supporter has died here in a political clash.”
The Cooch Behar district LF leader, Mr Tarini Roy, said: “In this reign of terror we have been campaigning and trying to retain Cooch Behar zilla parishad and maximum number of panchayat samitis in the district. But we do not know about Trinamul&’s terror tactics at the last moment.”
“Almost all booths in Tufanganj-I and II, Cooch Behar (Sadar)-I, Mathabhanga, Sitai and Sitalkuchi blocks are highly sensitive due to TMC&’s continuous intimidation. The Left supporters are always in fear of attacks on them. Besides, partially sensitive blocks are Dinhata-II, Cooch Behar (Sadar)-II and Mathabhanga-II,” Mr Roy added.
