Tensions escalated in South 24-Parganas ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, as Trinamul Congress (TMC) candidate Jahangir Khan and police observer Ajay Pal Sharma came face to face on Tuesday amid protests by ruling party supporters.

Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamul Congress (TMC) national general secretary today launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Pandua, Tushar Majumdar, alleging that he had falsely claimed to be a doctor and was involved in corruption.
Coming down heavily on the BJP, Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee said the saffron party has converted the election, a festival of democracy, into a festival of atrocity.
According to reliable sources, the TMC, keeping an eye on the next Parliamentary elections, has planned to ready its organisation so that it can regain the lost Lok Sabha seats by inducting MLAs and MPs from the BJP fold.
Veteran leader, Dr Manas Bhunia has been made minister for water resources investigation and development department.
"In the past around one week, around 200 of our members have been attacked at different places in the district by TMC-backed criminals. Several hundred houses have been damaged, household articles stolen and property looted. No one has been arrested yet by the police. Instead of arresting the criminals, police are harassing our members," he added.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, however, denied involvement in the matter.
