Tensions escalated in South 24-Parganas ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, as Trinamul Congress (TMC) candidate Jahangir Khan and police observer Ajay Pal Sharma came face to face on Tuesday amid protests by ruling party supporters.

Coming down heavily on the BJP, Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee said the saffron party has converted the election, a festival of democracy, into a festival of atrocity.
It will be a priority of sorts for Banerjee to accommodate some of the winners of her party from these districts who reduced the Congress and CPI-M presence in these areas to a zilch.
Amidst the process of setting aside the doubts spread by ruling party baiters from the saffron camp emerged the clear message that it would be TMC chief Mamata Banerjee who would lead a newly formed Opposition cohort against the Prime Minister Narenda Modi-led BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, whose leaders ironically had claimed not so long ago they would win as many seats as they ended up losing today, was relegated to a distant second place, but will be the main Opposition in the state as this election saw the eclipse of both the Congress and the Left parties.
On the other hand, TMC candidate of Habibpur, Pradip Baskey, allegedly visited booths with party symbols in his dresses and engaged himself in "heated discussions" with the central forces in some of the booths over this.
In the minority-dominated districts of Murshidabad and Malda in North Bengal, the Congress too is a major contender for Muslim votes.
