Breaking the long-stretched dry spell across the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, the iconic tourist destinations of Gulmarg and Sonamarg in the Kashmir Valley on Sunday witnessed the season’s first snowfall, coinciding with the onset of the 40-day harsh winter period known as Chillai Kalan.
The higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh received a fresh spell of snowfall, and parts of the mid-hills recorded light rainfall the previous day, blocking the Manali-Leh highway between Darcha and Sarchu.
This may lead to disruptions of essential services viz. water and electricity, communications and related services.
The weather office had forecast inclement weather in J&K and Ladakh till 9 January.
The road has been closed in the wake of slippery road conditions following heavy snowfall over the region.
The temperature in certain areas of Ladakh drops to -30 degrees Celsius during winters. The situation in J&K gets worse particularly in the Kashmir valley and upper reaches of Jammu when the roads get blocked due to snow and landslides.
