Breaking the long-stretched dry spell across the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, the iconic tourist destinations of Gulmarg and Sonamarg in the Kashmir Valley on Sunday witnessed the season’s first snowfall, coinciding with the onset of the 40-day harsh winter period known as Chillai Kalan.
The higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh received a fresh spell of snowfall, and parts of the mid-hills recorded light rainfall the previous day, blocking the Manali-Leh highway between Darcha and Sarchu.
"Three trekkers are dead while 10 of them have been rescued. The dead are lying somewhere at around 15000 feet. ITBP team is reaching to the spot today to search the bodies," said ITBP.
The weather later is likely to remain mainly dry till the end of this month.
Likewise, Manali and its uphill Solang ski slopes and Kalpa, 250 km from the state capital, saw snowfall.
Nainital last experienced a major landslide in 1997 near DSB Campus college when the Naina Peak gave way in 1988-89.
Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place in both the states as it registered its low at 2.3 degrees Celsius.
