The clash took place when Kabir visited areas in Nowda where a crude bomb hurling incident had been reported a day earlier. Kabir claimed that irregularities were reported at two polling booths in Nowda.
After a prolonged tug-of-war, the West Bengal Police on Friday agreed to hand over the case diary in the recent Beldanga violence case in minority-dominated Murshidabad district to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the matter following clearances from the Calcutta High Court as well as the Supreme Court.
Exercising its authority under Section 13CC of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the Commission ordered the suspension of the officials and directed the Chief Secretary of West Bengal to promptly initiate disciplinary proceedings against them.
However, the FIR was registered almost 48 hours after the deadline set by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for the same.
In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday expressed serious concern over repeated incidents of violence in Beldanga, Murshidabad, and observed that the central government can order an NIA probe if needed.
