Covid 3rd wave at the doorstep

In the last 24 hours, the fresh Covid infections in the state have crossed the 1,000 mark - for the first time in the last 177 days. According to data available, of the total 1,089 cases, 540 were detected in Kolkata, 145 in North 24 Parganas, 79 in South 24-Parganas and 60 in Howrah in the last 24 hours. The health department headed by the chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee has also expressed concern over the rerun of community transmissions of Covid-19 infections this time.

Health dept ramps up hospital facilities

The department has arranged for 3816 paediatric beds, 2438 sick newborn care unit (SNCU) beds, 164 beds in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and 229 beds in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in the 77 three-tier health facilities--sub-divisional hospital, district hospital and medical college and hospital-across the state, it is learnt.

"As there has been a spurt in paediatric cases and in view of the anticipated third wave of Covid-19, we are taking elaborate steps in strengthening the paediatric beds, especially the critical care facility at the district level. A total of 2348 beds in the CCU, PICU, NICU are being kept ready by augmenting the existing infrastructure,"
