Several tourists stranded at the high reaches of Gulmarg due to some technical snag in a private helicopter in which they were flying on Friday were rescued by the Army. Helicopters were used by the Army for the rescue mission.
Around 400 athletes are competing at the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg, where events in skiing and snowboarding will be held over the next four days.
The Ladakh UT also experienced widespread snow.
The deceased have been identified as Liaqat Ahmad (27) and Ishfaq Ahmad Khatana (33), both residents of Chadoosa in Baramulla district.
Breaking the long-stretched dry spell across the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, the iconic tourist destinations of Gulmarg and Sonamarg in the Kashmir Valley on Sunday witnessed the season’s first snowfall, coinciding with the onset of the 40-day harsh winter period known as Chillai Kalan.
However, officials maintain that security arrangements for tourists remain robust and that local authorities continue to monitor all developments closely in the valley.
The famous tourist destination, Gulmarg, witnessed fresh snowfall, covering Affarwat and the meadows in a white blanket. Sonamarg also witnessed snowfall.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reaffirmed his government’s resolve to re-establish Gulmarg as a premier global golf destination, promising focused attention on golfing infrastructure, international-level tournaments and tourism-friendly facilities.
PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti said seeing "vulgar images from the recent fashion show in Gulmarg" was "deeply troubling".
