Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday, June 13, asked the high-level committee on demographic change to examine shifts in population patterns in India’s border districts, besides assessing the impact of illegal migration and other “unnatural causes”.
To study demographic changes on the ground, the committee has been asked to undertake field visits to border regions, metropolitan cities as well as industrial centres, PTI quoted officials as saying.

Notably, the retired Supreme Court judge Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar-headed committee was constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs last month for understanding demographic changes in country arising from illegal immigration and other unusual factors. It is also tasked with recommending appropriate remedial measures.
It also features former IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, former IPS officer Balaji Srivastava and economist Shamika Ravi. The Union Home Ministry’s Joint Secretary (Foreigners-I) serves as its member secretary.
While announcing the formation of the committee, Amit Shah earlier described demographic change as a serious issue linked not only to the country’s sovereignty but also to national security.
The Union Minister said the committee will conduct a “comprehensive assessment of demographic changes occurring across India due to illegal immigration and other unnatural causes, analyse patterns of abnormal population shifts at the levels of religious and social communities, and present a planned and time-bound solution”.
