At least 17 pupils were killed and 13 others seriously injured after a fire broke out at a school in central Kenya, police said on Friday.
According to police, information was received about a fire in a blue coloured CNG bus operating on the central secretariat to Seemapuri route.
While the local police were patrolling in the main market at around 11 pm, they came to know that two persons fired on the sweet shop, stated cops.
Fortunately, no causalities were reported in the incident, added officials.
Sources said residents of 31 villages in three unions of Ukhiya, Teknaf and Naikkhangchhari upazilas heard this early Friday.
Mr Modi has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs to the next kin of deceased and Rs. 50,000 to those injured in the accident from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
However, rescue and relief operations are underway at Hotel Levana as several people are feared to be still trapped.
As many as 40 fire engines were pressed into service and 150 firefighters finally managed to bring the blaze under control by 9:10 a.m., the fire official said.
As per the fire officials, the fire broke out at a tent near HDFC bank and the department got a call regarding the incident at around 1 a.m.
