The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) shared an article written by Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy in an English daily, on its social media platform X.
"The reply given by the Minister of Coal in the Rajya Sabha to a question raised by CPI MP PP Suneer has clearly exposed the government’s oft-repeated claims of transitioning towards renewable energy," the CPI Parliamentary Party Office said in a statement.
Replying to a query by BJD member Sambit Patra, the minister told the Upper House that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), periodically reviews the environmental compliance status of operating coal mines, including the mines in Sundargarh district of Odisha.
Coal production from captive and commercial mines in June 2025 stood at 15.57 million tonnes (MT), while dispatches reached 17.31 MT, according to data released by the Ministry of Coal.
In 2022-23, the coal production was 893.191 MT while the import was 237.668 MT.
As of July 19, the Ministry of Coal has achieved production at 294.20 MT, reflecting a robust growth rate of 10.70% compared to the same period last year, which was 265.77 MT.
The coal dispatch has shown a growth of 34.25 per cent YoY, from 34.07 MT in Q1 of FY24 to 45.68 MT in Q1 of FY25.
India’s coal production for June 2024 reached 84.63 MT (Provisional), with a growth rate of 14.49 per cent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year, which was 73.92 MT.
During April 2024, Coal India Limited (CIL) achieved a coal production of 61.78 MT, marking a growth of 7.31 per cent compared to the same period last year when it was 57.57 MT.
