The Premier League on Wednesday confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane had been awarded a goal previously credited to teammate Christian Eriksen and Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah—Kane’s competitor for the Golden Boot—took to Twitter to share his incredulity.

The contested goal was scored in Spurs’ 2-1 win over Stoke City, with television replays proving inconclusive over whether the striker had actually touched Eriksen’s goal bound, despite Kane immediately claiming the strike as his.

The 24-year-old claimed in the aftermath of the tie that he got the slightest of touches via his shoulder and Spurs confirmed they would be appealing the decision immediately.

“Harry Kane has been awarded Tottenham Hotspur’s second goal in their 2-1 win against Stoke City on Saturday, after the club and player successfully appealed to the Premier League’s Goal Accreditation Appeals Panel,” the Premier League stated on Wednesday.

“The goal had originally been awarded on the day to Christian Eriksen, but after taking the player’s testimony into account and reviewing the match footage, a three-person panel agreed that the final touch on the ball belonged to Kane.”

However, for those Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who were getting happy over some ‘bonus’ points, they will be sorely disappointed as the virtual counterpart of the Premier League confirmed that it would not be making any changes to points awarded in Gameweek 33.

Currently, Salah leads the Golden Boot race with 29 goals while Kane is now four behind on 25.

Liverpool have played 33 games in the league and hence, have just five more left in the season while Spurs have an extra tie due to their involvement in the FA Cup and it looks like the race to win the individual race will go down to the wire.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, with 21 strikes to his name, is a long shot to win the accolade.
