A day after being arrested for his alleged role in a brawl, England all-rounder Ben Stokes on Wednesday carved his space in the 16-member squad as vice-captain for the 2017-18 Ashes, starting November 23 in Brisbane.

Joe Root will captain the squad that includes batsmen like James Vince and Gary Balance. Sidelining all assumptions, top-order batsman Tom Westley missed out.

The England Cricket Board (ECB) also picked uncapped Craig Overton, Ben Foakes and Mason Crane, who would stretch their muscles on the exciting five-Test series in Australia.

Nevertheless, most shocking was the inclusion of Stokes, who was arrested in Bristol on Monday morning. Avon and Somerset police confirmed in a statement: “We were called to a disorder in Queens Road, Clifton, at around 2.35am (0135 GMT) on Monday.”

“A 27-year-old man was found to have suffered facial injuries and was taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary for treatment. A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and has since been released under investigation,” the statement read further, referring 27-year-old as victim and 26-year-old as the cricketer.

It was reported that Stokes also got a minor fracture in his right hand following the brawl but he is expected to be fit before the start of Ashes.

Stokes’ teammate Alex Hales, who witnessed the whole incident from a close distance and remained a part of investigation, failed to make a cut in the squad.

“Hales, who was with Stokes on Sunday night, didn’t train this morning and has returned voluntarily to Bristol today to help police with their inquiries,” the ECB had said in a statement.
