Congress Working Committee member and MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday denounced the circulation of his cropped images with Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, calling  it an act of “cheap politics.”

Speaking to media persons in Kottayam, Tharoor said that the photos were from a birthday celebration for Moitra who he referred to as a “child,” adding that they were distorted to give the impression of a “secret meeting.”

Tharoor said that he was present at Moitra’s birthday party, attended by around 15 people, including his sister. He said that he was being trolled by displaying the cropped version of the image taken during the function.

“It was her birthday party, and there were 15 people present. My sister was also invited, and she was in attendance. However, some people deliberately cropped out others and presented it as some secret private meeting. Anyone who sees these photos should think about who would have taken the photo if it was indeed a secret meeting. It was her birthday,” Tharoor said.

“She is 10 to 20 years younger than me. I can’t call her a child but for me, she is like one,” Tharoor said.

Tharoor clarified that he does not take online trolls seriously. He doesn’t even give them the importance the media gives them. Tharoor also stated that the priority is to work for the people.

A picture of Shashi Tharoor and Mahua Moitra together at a party has been circulated on social media giving an impression that it is a private meeting.

The pictures went viral after Mahua was accused of taking bribes to ask questions in the Lok Sabha and it was revealed by businessman Darshan Hiranandani that Mahua had given her Parliament login ID and password to prepare direct questions for her.
