Gujarat is Modi’s home turf and was elected the Chief Minister of the state three consecutive times. However, since he moved to the Centre after his election as the Prime Minister in 2014, none of his successors’ have been able to replicate his charisma.

This makes the electoral battle in the state a matter of prestige for the BJP especially in the wake of the Patidar movement led by Hardik Patel and an aggressive Congress campaign under a rejuvenated Rahul Gandhi.

On Sunday, PM Modi slammed the Opposition for criticising demonetisation, saying Congress leaders were in tears because they lost all they had looted from the poor because of note ban.

PM Modi also slammed the Opposition for criticising demonetisation, saying that the Congress leaders were in tears because they lost all they had looted from the poor because of note ban.

Gujarat will vote in two phases – on December 9 and 14 – to elect a 182-member Assembly. The results will be declared on December 18.
