Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday urged the people of Meghalaya and Nagaland to “vote in large numbers” as polling for the assembly elections in both the northeastern states began peacefully amidst tight security.

In a tweet, Modi said: “I urge the people of Meghalaya and Nagaland to vote in large numbers in the Assembly Elections taking place today.”

In both the states, polling stations opened at 7 am and the last ballot will be polled at 4 pm.

In Meghalaya, a total of 18,09,818 electorates, including 9,13,702 women and 89,405 first-time voters are eligible to exercise their franchise to decide the fate of 361 candidates, including 31 women and many independents.

As many as 340 polling stations have been categorised as “critical” and 580 as “vulnerable”.

In 2013 Meghalaya Assembly elections, the voters turnout was recorded at 87.97 per cent.

In Nagaland, a total of 11,76,432 voters, comprising of 5,97,281 male, 5,79,151 female and 5884 service voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise during the day to decide the fate of 195 candidates.

There are no third-gender voters in the state while the first time voters between the age group 18-19 years are 26,900.

Voting will be conducted in 2,156 polling stations as 40 polling stations fall under the Northern Angami-II seat, from where Rio has been declared elected unopposed.

With a win in Meghalaya, the BJP is looking to expand its presence in the northeastern states as it is already in power in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.

In Nagaland, its hope hinges on its alliance partner NDPP which is contesting from 40 seats. The saffron party has fielded candidates from the remaining 20 seats.

The Congress, which has given three chief ministers to Nagaland since the state’s inception in 1963, is contesting from only 18 seats.

The results of the elections in both the states will be declared on March 3.
