Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a brief outline of the discussions he will have with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to China which begins on 27 April.

PM Modi, who is scheduled to meet Xi in Wuhan, confirmed the ‘informal summit’ between the two leaders which was set during the recently concluded visit of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to China.

“I will be visiting Wuhan, China on 27-28 April 2018 for an Informal Summit with Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China,” wrote the PM on Twitter.

He said that a wide range of issues of bilateral and global importance will be taken up during his China trip.

“President Xi and I…will discuss our respective visions and priorities for national development, particularly in the context of current and future international situation,” he wrote.

The Indian PM also highlighted that a review of the development in India-China relations, which hit a nadir during the 73-day-long Doklam Crisis in 2017, will be on the table.

“We will also review the developments in India-China relations from a strategic and long-term perspective,” he wrote.

Friday’s visit will be the first by PM Modi since Xi Jinping was elevated to the status of ‘president for life’. It will also be the first one-to-one interaction between the two leaders since the Doklam crisis.

During her four-day visit to China, Swaraj met with the entire top leadership in China starting with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. It was immediately after the meeting between Wang and Swaraj on 22 April that the two sides announced the Modi-Xi meeting.

Swaraj went on to hold meetings with the Chinese vice-President Wang Qishan and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“The informal Summit will be an important occasion for them to exchange views on bilateral and international matters from an over-arching and long-term perspective with the objective of enhancing mutual communication at the level of leaders,” Swaraj had said in a press briefing after the confirmation of the Xi-Modi summit.

In his address, Wang Yi had said that the meeting between Xi and Modi will be “a complete success and a milestone” in the relationship between the two countries.

The focus of the meeting, the two ministers said, will be on terrorism, climate change, sustainable development, global healthcare, etc.
