Dealing a body blow to the Congress, its long term ally, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has decided against an alliance with the grand old party for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

According to reports, former CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat was not in favour of any alliance with Congress though, Yechury was soft towards the Congress to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

As a result, two separate political draft resolutions were placed before the Central Committee wherein the Karat camp trounced the Yechury camp by a 55-31 margin.

Karat, including several of the party’s Kerala unit leaders, have long argued in the Politburo that the CPI(M) should fight against the Narendra Modi-led BJP government and its policies, but not have any leaning towards the Congress or other Opposition parties.

Meanwhile, the announcement will in particular be a major setback for Congress chief Rahul Gandhi who after years of being called a ‘part-time politician’ finally had an image makeover before the Gujarat assembly polls and was raring to take on Modi.

Experts believed that under a new and aggressive Rahul Gandhi, the party could put up a tough fight in the 2019 polls if it could manage to stitch up as many alliances as possible while keeping old partnerships intact.
