Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said people who litter and throw garbage on the streets and roads have no right to chant Vande Mataram.

Addressing students on the theme of ‘Young India, New India’ on the day that Swami Vivekananda delivered his historic address in Chicago in 1893, Modi asked whether the people of India have the right to say ‘vande matram’?

“I ask the people of India, do we have the right to say ‘vande matram’. I may hurt many here today but we chew pan and then spit on Mother India, throw garbage and litter on the roads,” said Modi.

“The ones who have the right to say Vande Mataram are those who clean the filth and garbage around us,” he added amid chants of Vande Mataram at the Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital.

“Those who clean the nation are the real sons and daughters of ‘Bharat Mata’. I want to specially mention all those people who are working tirelessly to keep India clean,” he said further.
