A bus turned turtle in Budhal in Rajouri district of J-K on Friday, 2 February, killing three people and injuring 20 others.

According to the police, the bus was coming from Kotranka village and went out of the driver’s control near a camp of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The gravity of the situation and the difficulty of the terrain immediately made the authorities seek help from the nearest Air Force Station at Jammu for rescue and relief.

Wing Commander Vishal Jain and Squadron Leader Soumya Das of helicopter unit nicknamed “Condors” responded.

Under the command of Wing Commander Jain, an Mi-17 1V helicopter proceeded to rescue the victims and airlift them to a hospital at Jammu for treatment.

Since the helipad at Budhal was small for the Mi-17 1V, the victims who were critically injured had to be taken by road to Rajouri, which is 30 kilometres away. The IAF chopper was already waiting at the helipad at Rajouri when ambulances brought the victims.

The quick response helped save the lives of 26-year-old Ishaq and 25-year-old Farooq who are recuperating at the hospital.

In a statement, the captain said, “If I had any slim chance of landing the bird at Budhal, I would have taken it. I would have been able to save a few more people.”

The remaining injured are receiving treatment at Rajouri district hospital.
