Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called upon forensic experts to help strengthen the judicial system by using DNA profiling.

Speaking at the convocation ceremony of Gujarat Forensic Science University (GFSU) at Gandhinagar in Gujarat, the PM hailed the institution for its academic excellence.

“I call upon forensic experts to help the judicial system by using DNA profiling as much as possible so that culprits get punished immediately and the victims get justice,” said the PM.

“Criminals and ways of committing crime are constantly changing. In order to deal with rapidly changing crime scenario you also have to develop newer techniques to make it clear that criminals will not be spared,” he said.

Modi added that his government approved the DNA Technology (Use and Application) Regulation Bill 2018 due to the invaluable importance of DNA technology in forensic investigation.

“Through this bill, we will ensure that all DNA tests remain reliable and the data is safe,” he said.

The PM underlined that police, forensics and judiciary are the three pillars of criminal justice delivery system.

“Where these three pillars are strong, the people feel safe and crime is under control,” the PM pointed out.

“This is why a holistic approach to develop all three pillars was adopted in Gujarat,” the PM said referring to the three universities dedicated to law, security and forensics in the state.

“It is a matter of pride that in a short time, GFSU has achieved such a bench-mark of academic excellence that the National Assessment and Accreditation Council has awarded this University an ‘A’ Grade,” the PM said urging the students to not only use their education and intelligence to keep pace but also “to drive progressive changes that make our world a better place”.
