Haryana floor test: New CM Nayab Singh Saini moves confidence motion in House

Nayab Singh Saini was appointed new Haryana CM after Manohar Lal Khattar and his Cabinet resigned on Tuesday.

Haryana floor test: New CM Nayab Singh Saini moves confidence motion in House

The just-appointed Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday moved a confidence motion in the state legislative assembly to prove majority of the new BJP government.

CM Saini has been asked to prove majority in the House a day after he replaced Manohar Lal Khattar in a surprise move ahead of Lok Sabha elections.

Ahead of the floor test, the BJP expressed confidence of easily winning the floor test and claimed the support of 48 MLAs.

“This is just ceremonial. A total of 48 MLAs are with us anyway. JJP people are making a decision too…This is ceremonial and it will be carried out…This is a good tradition…,” Haryana Minister Ranjit Singh Chautala said.

Dushyant Chautala of JJP, which ruled the state in alliance with the BJP until yesterday, has reportedly issued a whip asking its MLAs to remain “absent” during the voting on confidence motion.

However, at least three JJP MLAs – Ram Kumar Gautam, Ishwar Singh and Devender Babli – reached the Haryana Assembly to attend the special session.

Meanwhile, former Haryana home minister Anil Vij, who is said to be upset with the party after former CM Manohar Lal Khattar and his Cabinet was asked to resign, said that he will always support the BJP.

“Situations keep changing, but in every situation, I have worked for the BJP. I will still do it even more than what I have done so far,” Vij said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the BJP broke its alliance with Dushyant Chautala’s JJP and CM Khattar tendered his resignation to Governor Bandaru Dattatreya. His Cabinet ministers also resigned.

BJP elected its state unit chief and Kurukshetra MP Nayab Singh Saini as its legislative party leader. Within hours, Saini took oath as the new CM along with five ministers.

Four BJP leaders, Kanwar Pal Gujjar, Jai Parkash Dalal, Moolchand Sharma, and Banwari Lal, and one independent MLA Ranjith Singh were administered oath by Governor Dattatreya.
