Prominent minority leader Aminul Haque Laskar has joined the Congress in Assam after switching sides from the BJP in the run up to the general election.

Laskar, who was the first minority MLA for the BJP in Assam in 2016, tendered his resignation on Wednesday. Previously serving as the deputy speaker of the Assam Assembly and as the chairperson of the Assam State Commission for Minorities, Laskar faced electoral defeat in 2021 at the hands of Karim Uddin Barbhuiya from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

Explaining his decision, Laskar cited departure of the BJP’s core political values in Assam, noting significant discrepancies between the party’s current stance and the principles he had aligned with during his 13-year tenure with them.

The induction of Laskar into the Congress party was met with approval by party officials, with Jitendra Singh Alwar, the party’s in-charge in Assam, present during the ceremony.

Laskar’s departure from the BJP raised concerns within the ruling party, particularly regarding its rapport with the minority community in Assam.

Laskar, who was the sole Muslim MLA representing the BJP in the region since 2016, cautioned that his exit could dent the party’s credibility among Muslim voters.

He drew parallels between the ideologies of the BJP and the AIUDF, suggesting a convergence that could potentially harm the BJP’s standing among minorities in Assam.
