Renowned hair stylist Jawed Habib joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, taking many by surprise especially because of his brush with the Hindutva brigade around two years ago.

After joining the BJP on Monday, Habib, whose company operates 846 hair and beauty salons in 110 cities across India, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and used his catchphrase ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’.

“Until today, I was the watchman of hair, but now I have become a watchman of the nation,” Habib said on Monday.

Interestingly, the last time Habib made deadlines was in 2017 when an ad by his company left a section of Hindus furious.

The ad, which was released around the time of Durga Puja and published in newspapers especially in West Bengal, depicted goddesses Durga, Laxmi, and Saraswati and gods Kartikeya and Ganesha getting their hair styling done at a JW salon.

The caption of the ad said, “Gods too visit JH Salon”.

Habib was slapped with a case for “insulting and demeaning” Hindu gods. In Hyderabad, a complaint was filed under section 295A of the IPC.

That was not all; the hairstylist became the target of trolling on social media.

On 5 September 2017, Habib’s company issued an apology for the ad.

In the apology, his company stated that the ad was published without approval from either Habib or the Mumbai-based corporate office.

“It was done without our knowledge of the Company by some local people in West Bengal,” the apology stated.

After joining the BJP on Monday, Habib said that he was “happy” with his decision because of the changes introduced in India by PM Modi.

“I am happy to join the BJP as I have seen the changes brought in the country by Prime Minister Modi in the last five years,” he said.

At the same time, he also said that one should not be ashamed of their background.

“I think nobody should be ashamed of their background, when the prime minister is proud to state that he was a ‘chaiwala’ then why should I be ashamed of calling myself a ‘nai’ (barber),” said Habib.
