A strike against the Vizhinjam seaport project has been called off on Tuesday. The 130-day-old protest by fisherfolk was called off after an anti-port committee arrived at a settlement with Chief Minister Piarayi Vijayan here.

With Vicar General Eugene Pereira, who was at the forefront of the protests, calling off the agitation, the Adani Group will start construction of the port as soon as the government announces that the strike is over. Eugene Pereira, however, clarified that the protests, being called off after reaching a certain stage, can resume if required.

The 138-day agitation saw large-scale chaos and violence in the coastal area, including an attack on the police station and personnel.

The fisherfolk at Vizhinjam have been protesting against the project for the past four months, alleging that its construction is causing massive sea erosion, taking away their livelihood and dwellings. They want an impact study conducted and the project to remain suspended until the study report comes out.

Earlier on Tuesday, the state chief minister, while addressing the Assembly, asserted that the construction of Vizhinjam seaport will not be stopped.
