Bollywood’s evergreen comic actor Rajpal Yadav has finally caught a sigh of relief! The Delhi High Court has granted him interim bail in the long-pending ₹9 crore cheque bounce case linked to his 2012 film ‘Ata Pata Laapata’ which also marked his directorial debut. The next hearing is scheduled for March 18, 2026 giving Yadav just enough time to attend a family wedding.

From laughter to legal drama

Fans have always loved Rajpal Yadav for his rib-tickling performances in movies like ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ and ‘Hungama’. But off-screen, the actor’s life took a stressful turn over financial troubles tied to ‘Ata Pata Laapata’.

Back in 2010, Yadav had taken loan of ₹5 crore to produce the film under his own banner. The movie flopped at the box office leaving him unable to repay the loan.

Over time due to accumulated interest and unpaid dues, amount ballooned to ₹9 crore across seven separate cases.

Legal notices, court hearings, repayment orders followed. This kept the actor in spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Jail time and court battles

The case took serious turn in 2018 when the magistrate court convicted Rajpal Yadav under Section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act for non-payment. He was sentenced to six months in Tihar Jail.

Since then, the case has been moving through multiple appeals, adjournments, partial repayments. Rajpal reportedly made some payments during this time. But dues kept piling up.

Despite repeated court orders, full amount remained unsettled. This led to latest directive to surrender in February 2026.

Reason behind the interim bail

On February 5, 2026, Rajpal Yadav appeared before court and surrendered at Tihar Jail as per the Delhi HC’s order. However, there was a silver lining: the actor requested interim bail to attend his niece’s wedding on February 19 citing family commitments.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma passed the order granting Yadav temporary relief after he made a partial payment of ₹1.5 crore to the complainant.

This means the actor can leave jail and be with his family, at least until the next hearing on March 18.
