hIt all started with a casual conversation and turned into one of those classic Bollywood “what really happened?” stories, complete with confusion, missed chances, and a warm hug at the end.
Actor Rajpal Yadav, who is now busy promoting his upcoming film ‘Bhooth Bangla’, recently opened up about a surprising chapter from his career. In a chat with Zoom, he spoke about whether he ever regretted turning down a role in a film. But what came out instead was a behind-the-scenes story involving Shah Rukh Khan, ‘Om Shanti Om’, and a misunderstanding that quietly floated around for years.

And like most Bollywood tales, this one is less about drama on screen and more about drama off screen.
A casual chat that opened an old Bollywood confusion
Rajpal Yadav revealed that he once found himself unknowingly linked to a misunderstanding involving Shah Rukh Khan and a role in ‘Om Shanti Om’.
According to him, he only realised something was wrong when he was working on the set of ‘Billu Barber’.
He recalled how a person connected to the production, he mentioned Juhi Chawla’s brother, who was handling the film’s production, met him one evening. The person greeted him warmly, even hugged him, and told him that Shah Rukh Khan had a lot of affection for him. He was also advised to meet SRK soon.
At that time, Rajpal was surprised because he remembered meeting Shah Rukh Khan only recently during ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, where he had done a small scene. He said SRK had enjoyed working with him in that brief appearance and had even spoken about doing a longer track together someday.
But then came the twist.
The same person told him there seemed to be some “confusion” regarding a role that Shah Rukh Khan had reportedly wanted for him.
Rajpal said he was told that SRK had even requested a role to be written specially for him but it was allegedly turned down, with the message that he did not have time.
Rajpal said this was news to him.
“Neither I knew nor my manager knew”
What made the situation even more confusing was Rajpal’s reaction when he checked with his own team. He immediately contacted his manager to find out if he had ever rejected such an offer.
The answer, he said, was no.
According to Rajpal, neither he nor his manager had any idea about such a role or any rejection. This made the situation even more unclear for him, as the story circulating in the industry did not match his reality at all.
He then explained that later it became clear there had been some miscommunication or internal gossip that led to the misunderstanding. He hinted that someone may have spoken negatively or presented him in the wrong light during discussions related to ‘Om Shanti Om’.
Then e also mentioned that this kind of confusion is not unusual in the film industry, where stories often change shape as they pass from one person to another. In his words, incidents like these happen “10 to 20 times” in Bollywood.
Billu Barber role change and a warm end with Shah Rukh Khan
Rajpal also spoke about another key point in his journey: his connection with ‘Billu Barber’. He revealed that he was originally likely to be part of the film in a major role. However, the part eventually went to actor Irrfan Khan.
While he did not express bitterness, he mentioned it as part of the larger sequence of events happening around that time in his career, where roles kept shifting due to various reasons.
Most importantly, Rajpal clarified that despite the confusion involving ‘Om Shanti Om’, there was no lasting tension between him and Shah Rukh Khan.
He said that when he later met SRK, the two shared a warm moment and hugged each other. Whatever misunderstanding had existed cleared naturally, without any confrontation or formal explanation.
Rajpal described it as if there had never been any issue at all.
