Bollywood’s beloved comic actor Rajpal Yadav is in the news again. The Delhi High Court recently refused him relief in his long-standing cheque-bounce case. But the actor isn’t facing this storm alone. From actors Sonu Sood to Gurmeet Choudhary, and now Tej Pratap Yadav pledging a huge financial sum, support is pouring in.
Rajpal Yadav’s legal woes explained
The story dates back to 2010 when Rajpal Yadav took a loan of ₹5 crore from Delhi-based Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial debut, ‘Ata Pata Laapata’ (2012). Unfortunately, the movie flopped at the box office triggering repayment problems.

The legal trouble intensified when seven cheques issued by Rajpal bounced. In April 2018, Magisterial Court convicted him and wife Radha under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. He was sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment. This verdict was later upheld by Sessions Court in early 2019.
In June 2024, the court temporarily suspended his sentence asking him to show “sincere and genuine measures” to repay the dues. That had now ballooned to nearly ₹9 crore. Despite partial payments, Rajpal missed multiple deadlines. He had only deposited ₹75 lakh by October 2025 via two demand drafts.
Earlier this month Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma made it clear that celebrity status does not grant indefinite leniency. On February 4, 2026, the court rejected a last-minute plea for a one-week extension to arrange funds, noting that Rajpal had failed nearly 20 previous undertakings. The order required him to surrender.
Tej Pratap Yadav steps in
Political leader Tej Pratap Yadav, chief of Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD), announced he would provide financial assistance of ₹11 lakh to Rajpal’s family.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Tej Pratap wrote in Hindi, “I just received information about the pain of the family of the honorable Rajpal Yadav ji through the post of my elder brother Rao Inderjeet Yadav ji. In this extremely difficult time, I and my entire JJD family stand in complete empathy and solidarity with their grieving family. With a spirit of human compassion and support, on behalf of the JJD family, I am providing financial assistance of ₹11,00,000 to their family.”
Sonu Sood extends a hand
Sood, known for his philanthropy and generosity, stepped forward. He announced on X that Rajpal would be part of his upcoming film urging the film industry to back him.
In his post, Sood wrote: “Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has given years of unforgettable work to our industry. Sometimes life turns unfair, not because of talent, but because timing can be brutal.”
“He will be part of my film, and I believe this is the moment for all of us producers, directors, colleagues to stand together. A small signing amount, adjustable against future work, is not charity, it’s dignity. When one of our own is going through a tough phase, the industry must remind him he’s not alone. This is how we show we are more than just an industry,” he added.
Gurmeet Choudhary joins the support wave
Television actor Gurmeet Choudhary also voiced his concern. Taking to social media, Gurmeet urged the film fraternity to come together and help Rajpal.
“It breaks my heart to see a senior, immensely talented artist like Rajpal Yadav ji going through such a painful phase. He has given us countless smiles, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Today, he needs us. As a fellow actor and as a human being, I am stepping forward to help in whatever way I can. I humbly request all producers, directors, and members of our film fraternity let’s come together, with compassion and humanity, and find a solution. Our industry is a family. And family does not abandon its own,” he tweeted.
