A 21-year-old photography student was mowed down allegedly by a drunk man as a revenge to former’s objection to his smoking in public. As per reports, the incident happened near the AIIMS Trauma Centre here on Sunday.

The victim, Gurpreet Singh, who was in coma since Sunday, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. The accused, Rohit Krishna Mahanta, is a lawyer and has been arrested. Mahanta reportedly is a standing counsel of the Assam government. Initially, Mahanta was booked for rash driving, but after the death of Gurpreet, murder charges has been slapped against him.

A native of Bathinda in Punjab, Gurpreet was pursuing a photography course from Delhi College of Photography and was staying with his classmate Maninder Singh at Shahbad Dairy. Gurpreet and Maninder were at the spot to shoot a documentary on the lives of outstation patients and their relatives.

As per Maninder, Mahanta was asked not to smoke near them as it was against their religious beliefs. Mahanta, however, didn’t take it positively and an argument ensued. Sensing trouble, the two friends left the place on their Bullet motorcycle.

They barely rode 500 metres when a speeding Ford Fiesta rammed the two-wheeler from behind outside the AIIMS trauma centre. “Gurpreet and I were thrown off the bike. When I got up, I saw the same man who had threatened us minutes ago behind the wheels. He had chased us and hit us intentionally,” Maninder told mediapersons.

With the help of an auto driver, Maninder shifted Gurpreet to the trauma centre nearby, where he succumbed on Wednesday.
