Violence in pvt hospital, family of dead patient alleges overcharging

Violence rocked Peerless Hospital at EM Bypass today after a group of angry relatives of a dead patient alleged that the hospital authorities charged a hefty amount of medical bill around four lakh rupees showing the patient alive for two or three days in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Swapan Mondal, a 55 year-old resident of Sonarpur area in South 24 Parganas district was brought to the hospital after he met with a severe accident sustaining injuries including one affecting his oesophagus on 9 February.

Doctors announced Swapan dead on Friday night after they performed a surgery on his knee earlier in the day, relatives said alleging the hospital authorities have charged the exorbitant bill showing him alive in the ICU.

“Our patient died two or three days ago but the hospital management along with concerned doctors wanted to fleece additional money from us delaying to announce his death till Friday night, ” the relatives alleged adding that they have paid Rs 1.20 lakhs to the hospital.

Peerless medical director, Dr Sinchan Bhattacharya said, “Our doctors had spoken to the patient even half an hour before his death.

“We have done our best to save him but unfortunately we could not do so.We did not demand or claim any dues from the relatives of the deceased.

They did not pay us what they were supposed to.” Around 12:10 a.m. an altercation took place between the security staff of the hospital and the family members of Swapan.

The Panchasayar police station had to intervene to bring the situation under control. According to police, “Neither any property of the hospital was damaged nor was any staff member manhandled.

No complaint has been lodged at the police station from either party till now.”
