With the cancellation of her China trip, chief minister Mamata Banerjee is planning a three day district tour next week.

Miss Banerjee cancelled her China trip eight hours before boarding the Beijing flight as she was unable to get confirmation about the proposed political exchange programme with the Chinese government representatives and the Communist Party of China leaders. She was supposed to return to Kolkata on 30 June after staying in Beijing till 27 June and the next two days in Shanghai.

She had stated that there was no point in visiting the country without the proposed meetings. She had enough work here and did not want her visit to be a leisure trip.

Sources in Nabanna said that Miss Banerjee is not in favour of sitting idle and so has decided to visit East Midnapore next week.

If things go as planned, Miss Banerjee would visit Digha on 26 June. On the next day, the district administrative meeting would be held and a public distribution programme would be organised on 28 June. She would return to Kolkata on the same day.

Miss Banerjee’s Digha tour assumes significance as her dream project of refashioning Digha on the lines of Goa is already being worked on, with the state government taking up several measures to attract not only people from Bengal and the rest of the country, but also from foreign lands.

Miss Banerjee held several rounds of district meetings before the panchayat polls. Immediately after the poll results, she started her district visits and held administrative meetings in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Howrah.

Her East Midnapore visit is likely to mark the beginning of district visits ahead of the 2019 polls.
