The Uttarakhand government was forced to suspend an engineer after a video surfaced that allegedly showed him taking Rs 9-lakh bribe from a contractor. The video of Imran Ahmed, Executive Engineer, Jal Nigam, Dehradun branch, became viral on the social media. The state government served suspension order to the engineer on Friday.

The video shows a man handing over Rs 9 lakh to Ahmed and promises to pay remaining Rs 1 lakh the next day. As the video of the sting operation became viral, the state government was under pressure to take action.

“Uttarakhand government has decided to suspend Imran Ahmed, Executive Engineer, Jal Nigam, Dehradun branch following sting operation reported in media in which the said officer was seen demanding Rs. 9 lakh as bribe for the construction of Sewage Treatment Plant at Mothorowala,” an official statement said.

The state administration has also taken note of the media reports about poor material used for constructing an overhead tank built at the residence of Uttarakhand Water Resources Minister Prakash Pant.

Construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant is underway at Mothorowala. The plant is being set up with a cost of Rs 125 crore and the video shows the engineer taking bribe from a contractor involved in the project.

An inquiry against the accused official has been ordered. The order said that during his suspension period he would be attached with the office of Chief Engineer, Jal Sansthan.
