This year, the organizers of the Durga Puja in Delhi are facing difficulties in organising the much revered and awaited Durga Pujas. The reason cited by the organizers is certain restrictions put up by the Delhi Pollution Control Board.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) had issued an order in early July according to which the maximum height of the idols was fixed at five feet.

According to the DPCC, the exercise is being conducted to encourage organisers to immerse smaller idols in nearby artificial ponds and thereby reduce the post-immersion pollution load of the River Yamuna. However, this directive has created confusion among Durga Puja organizers of the National Capital, following which they approached Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and shared their grievance with him.

A delegation of the New Delhi Kali Bari, Mandir Marg, which is a leading Durga Puja organiser of Delhi, met Delhi CM Kejriwal on Saturday to convey that the condition on the height of the idols is not unacceptable to them.

Their argument is that since devotees from all parts of the capital and outside visit the puja venues to have a glimpse and seek blessings of Maa Durga, those at the rear would not be able to get a glimpse of Maa Durga if the height of the idol is only five feet.

Till the time of filing of this report, there had been no update either from the organizers or from the Delhi CM.
