New Delhi, 8 August
The state government will take stern action against the government employees for not attending the offices in Darjeeling, chief secretary Mr Sanjay Mitra said today at Writers’ Buildings.
He said the state government has also sent a letter to the principal secretary of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) to start a process for selecting a new chairman of the GTA. The chairman&’s post is vacant after Mr Bimal Gurung submitted his resignation to governor Mr MK Narayanan.
Chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee said home secretary Mr Basudeb Banerjee visited Darjeeling to take stock of the situation and submitted a report. “The chief secretary, home secretary and director general of police discussed the report and they will brief the media regarding this matter,” she said.
Mr Mitra said the state government would give full protection to the employees so that they could join the offices during the bandh. He said the rationing system, travel and tourism sector and tea industry have been affected following the movement of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM). The government is trying its best to clear the National Highway.
“The state will take strong action if anybody creates inconvenience for the local people. Everybody has to obey the High Court’s order,” he said.
Home Secretary Mr Basudeb Banerjee said police have started arresting the Gorkhaland Personnel volunteers who were involved in corruption practices and arson cases. He said a political party formed this voluntary force and it has no government recognition. If GLP volunteers are further involved in any case they will be arrested, he said.
