Congress party on Sunday lambasted the BJP for politicizing constitutional institutions in the state.

“BJP is politicizing constitutional institutions like the Himachal Pradesh VidhanSabha (HPVS). The position of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of HPVS is neutral and their participation in the ‘Janmanch’ programme does not suit them owing to the constitutional nature,” charged Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu here on Sunday.

“The Speaker and the Deputy Speaker should distance themselves from the government programmes that are run on the party lines. These posts are the guardian of the assembly members,” he maintained.

He accused the BJP of making a mockery of the constitutional institution as the ‘Janmanch’ is purely the BJP’s programme.”If the persons sitting on the constitutional posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker participate in the party programmes, fairness cannot be expected from them. Both are bound to the dignity and decorum of the office and it does not suit them to be the puppet of the party and also they cannot be assigned duties to be part of public programmes of the party,” he alleged.

Expressing surprise Sukhu alleged that such a thing was not expected from the Speaker Rajiv Bindal who is an experienced politician and well understands the dignity of the post.

He accused the BJP of saffronisation of the constitutional posts which is a threat to the democracy.

Sukhu advised both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to function by remaining within the limits of the constitutional posts in order to uphold the sanctity of the post.
