The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will organise a 24-hour ceremony to highlight the importance of cow in Bengaluru on 2 February. The event, ‘Go Raksha Asthayama Yagna’, attempts to educate people on the importance of cow and cattle protection – two emotive issues of the BJP.

According to reports, the ceremony will be attended by state BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa and Bengaluru South MP Ananth Kumar.

The event comes just two months ahead of the assembly elections in Karnataka.

“We want to increase awareness because protecting the cow is important for the environment. The lakes of Bengaluru are badly polluted today because of illegal slaughter-houses which pollute them,” News18 quoted Siddhartha Goenka as saying.

The BJP said that the Yagna has been organised to strengthen the rural economy at the grassroots level.

Chanting of the ‘Akhanda Ramayana’ and a dance programme on Ramayana will follow the Yagna.

The Congress has reportedly called the event an attempt at polarisation.

As the hustings approach, both the BJP and the Congress are been busy with projecting themselves as the better option. There has also been a sharp inflection in exchange of words between the BJP and the Congress as the electoral battle for Karnataka heats up.

BJP president Amit Shah had on Thursday, 25 January, said that “Siddaramaiah and corruption are synonyms”. In response, the Karnataka CM labelled Shah “an ex-jail bird who chose another former jail bird to be his party’s CM candidate”.

In December 2017, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath campaigned for the BJP in north Karnataka.

Recently, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Adityanath had a Twitter spat. Siddaramaiah had shot a barb at Adityanath by tweeting that the UP CM can learn from Karnataka and “address the starvation deaths sometimes reported” from UP.

In response, Adityanath had tweeted that Siddaramaiah can take note of the “number of farmers committing suicide” and “numerous deaths and transfer of honest officers” in Karnataka.
