Rayagada looks to achieve sustainable growth along with increase in farmer income

The agriculture strategy committee of Rayagada district has targeted an increase of ten per cent in production of food grains such as oil seeds, pulses and vegetables in the Kharif 2019 season to achieve sustainable growth in production and increase in the farmers’ income.

The targeted production has been set at 248766 MTs of rice, 94999 MTs of other millets, 38979 MTs of pulses , 5500 MTs of oil seeds, 62567 MTs of cotton , 3689 MTs of other fibers , 108777 MTs of vegetables, 10888 MTs of spices and 53 MTs of other crops .

District collector Pramod Kumar Behera directed the concerned officials to provide certified high yielding paddy seeds through PACS and private dealers specially emphasising on DRR varieties.

He added that expansion of area for cultivation of food grains should be provided adequate irrigation. He also stressed on the importance of spreading awareness on judicious utilisation of water during critical times .

The department has mooted out a plan for the ensuing Kharif season to be exercised on an area of 1,74000 heactares of land to be covered under different crops The Deputy Director of Agriculture Mr K.C Singh informed that the concerned department has sold different kinds of agricultural implements at subsidised costs in the financial year 2018-19.

As many as 60 tractors , 88 power tillers, 11 reapers, 16 transplanters, 71 power driven implements, 250 post harvest machines, 51 special power driven implements, 161 rotavators, 10 combined harvesters, and 256 diesel pump sets have been provided to enhance the quality production and to give the farmers incentives for improving their financial standards.

The agriculture wing is hopeful that the increased target is achievable since there is adequate irrigation potential. This has been possible due to construction of deep bore wells besides dug wells and lifts.
